Saint Names

In the Sacrament of Confirmation we are sealed--by name--with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is customary for candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation to choose a saint whose name will be used by the bishop when conferring the sacrament (N. Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit).

You are welcome to use your baptismal/given name if you would like, especially if it is the name of a saint. This shows the connection between the two sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. You are also welcome and encouraged to choose a new name. Not only will the saint’s name be used in the ritual of the sacrament, the saint will serve as a lifelong model and guide.

Try to choose a saint whom you identify with. Look for someone whose life story is similar to yours or who is the patron of something important to you; look for a saint who inspires you to live a more virtuous life.

Note that you may choose a saint (someone is canonized) OR a blessed (someone who is beatified but not canonized).
